What is Arena ball?

Indoor Baseball and Softball Games!

  • A unique balance between fun, competition and playing to win in an environment of encouragement, sportsmanship and respect.
  • Fast-paced games that require quick reaction and sound decision-making skills.
  • The opportunity to grow one's skills under game conditions in a structured and energetic environment.
  • No coaches!  What better way for young people to learn leadership, organization and communication skills than doing so without grownups intervening?  To that end, no coaches or adults are allowed on or near the bench area.  Players are empowered to organize themselves and rotate positions every inning under the supervision of Sports Barn personnel.

Note: Some younger age levels are a combination of 45 minutes of instruction + 45 minutes coach-pitch game.

FAQ's:

Can a player "play up"?  Players have the option of playing up at the next age level depending on their skill and experience.  Since players follow a set defensive rotation each inning which includes first base, the ability to consistently catch, throw and hit faster machine speeds is vital.  Further, competing against older kids while navigating the faster speed of the indoor game are additional factors parents must consider.

Who umpires?  Sports Barn staff members "feed" the pitching machine and serve as umpire and game organizer.

What do I wear?  Sneakers (no cleats).  Sliding is allowed and can be done safely on our turf floor, however we strongly recommend long pants be worn!

What do I need to bring?  Only the key items - bat, helmet, glove, batting gloves - that are necessary for baseball/softball play.  No catcher's gear is required.  For simplicity, ease in traveling under and around netting with our building and to save space, we recommend bringing only equipment that is needed in a smaller bag.

Are there home runs?  Fun, fast, action-oriented...where the ball is put in play nearly every pitch, is why Arena Ball continues to be popular since its inception in 2001.  However, what kids love most about Arena Ball is the home run!  The high ceiling of our building has made AB, home runs and Sports Barn synonymous!  So much so that players compete weekly for the top spot on our home run leader board and are rewarded for finishing there at the conclusion of the program.

Did you know?  The Barnyard is available year-round for any team or group that wishes to rent space and play Arena Ball.  For groups of 8 (recommended minimum) to 16 (maximum), playing ball indoors is a great "cabin fever", school vacation, birthday party, etc. idea to get out of the house and be active any time of year!  If you are interested in reserving the Barnyard any time of year or have questions about Arena Ball, please email Norm@haynersportsbarn.com
